Job Summary
Lead assigned prescribed burns as the Certified Prescribed Burn Manager, conducting pre-burn briefings, reviewing approved plans, and directing crew assignments while monitoring fire behavior and weather conditions. Coordinate ignition and holding operations, ensure all regulatory notifications and permits are completed, and maintain command control throughout the burn. Make independent go/no-go decisions to modify, postpone, or terminate operations based on safety and compliance requirements. Complete and submit all required burn documentation, including weather data, personnel information, and incident reports, following each burn. Work outdoors in varying weather and rough terrain during the prescribed burn season on an on-call basis with no guaranteed minimum hours.
Required Qualifications
- Current Certified Prescribed Burn Manager (CPBM) certification issued by the State of Illinois / Illinois Department of Natural Resources
- CPBM certification issued by the State of Michigan, State of Indiana or State of Wisconsin
- Demonstrated prescribed-fire experience
- Working knowledge of prescribed-fire safety, fire behavior, and burn operations
- Ability to lead and direct a prescribed-burn crew
- Ability to make sound, independent go/no-go decisions based on field conditions
- Ability to complete required burn documentation accurately
- Ability to communicate effectively with burn crews, Pizzo Group management, fire departments, emergency personnel, landowners, and other parties as necessary
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods
- Ability to walk and work over uneven, wooded, wet, or rough terrain
- Ability to work in conditions involving smoke, heat, fire, dust, and vegetation
- Ability to carry and operate prescribed-fire equipment as necessary
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
- Ability to respond quickly to changing field conditions
- Ability to communicate effectively with crew members in an active fire environment
- Ability to read the workplace safety and health posters
- Compliance with all applicable OSHA and Illinois safety standards
- Ability to report hazardous conditions to the employer
- Ability to report any job-related injury or illness
- Ability to report any near misses to the employer
- Ability to join the health and safety committee
- Ability to provide guidance on site from an H/S perspective
- Ability to render first aid
- Ability to delay, modify, suspend, or cancel a burn when actual conditions do not meet the approved prescription
- Ability to determine that proceeding would create an unacceptable safety or compliance concern
Desired Qualifications
- CPBM certification issued by the State of Illinois / Illinois Department of Natural Resources (Desired)
