Job Summary

Attend the Sperry School of Rail Flaw Detection for paid, hands-on training in ultrasonic testing standards and rail detection methods. Apply classroom knowledge to field assignments across Short Line and Class I railways, performing equipment setup, troubleshooting, and basic repairs while adhering to railroad safety protocols. Work collaboratively within crews to develop leadership skills, eventually operating your own testing platform or leading a team. Complete a background check, drug screen, and DOT physical, then advance to a $60,000 annual base salary after certification. Travel extensively throughout the eastern or western US for extended periods of 3–4 months at a time.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to multitask and work with tools/equipment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and DOT physical (where applicable)
  • Must be able to travel throughout eastern or western US for extended periods (3-4 months at a time)
  • Must attend and successfully complete training at the Sperry School of Rail Flaw Detection
  • Must achieve certification in ultrasonic testing standards

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) experience (ultrasonic preferred)
  • Prior railroad experience
  • Mechanical aptitude or experience with automotive/technical systems
