Certified Nurse Midwife

Independently manages the care of low-risk women during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods; co-manages higher risk patients when determined appropriate by CNM and MD; provides standard maternity care and counseling to women in accordance with ACNM standards and the State Nurse Practice Act. Responsibilities include evaluating obstetrical health, determining pregnancy status and fetal presentation, obtaining comprehensive medical and obstetrical histories, performing physical examinations (including pap smear, breast and pelvic exams), documenting findings, coordinating with physicians for abnormal results, ordering labs/imaging, providing preventative care, teaching and counseling patients, and guiding antepartum classes. Intrapartum care includes labor assessment, independent management of low-risk labor (with physician oversight for higher risk patients) and pain management planning (including epidural requests). Postpartum care encompasses health supervision, family planning counseling and contraception prescription. Kaiser Permanente reserves the right to modify job descriptions and status as needed.
