Job Summary
Greet and welcome patients in a culturally appropriate manner, taking histories, vital signs, and administering medications, vaccinations, and procedures such as EKGs and ear lavages. Prepare patient charts, enter orders, record data, and perform laboratory tests including routine waived tests, quality control monitoring, and specimen collection. Maintain accurate laboratory and patient records, ensure HIPAA compliance, and support team communication through huddles and appointment scheduling. Assist with room preparation, equipment maintenance, and infection control protocols while adhering to clinic policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program
- Minimum of 1 year medical assistant work experience in a hospital or medical clinic setting
- Current certification as a registered or certified medical assistant
- Must be computer literate
- Current with BLS/CPR
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Current valid Texas driver's license for the appropriate type of vehicle
- Texas Liability insurance
- Verified driving record with law enforcement
- Ability to bend, stretch, stoop, stand, sit, and lift 20 lbs
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Ability to work with medical equipment to include but not limited to: electronic and manual vital signs measurement, auditory and visual examinations, oxygen and suction apparatus, peak flowmeter
- Ability to read, write and speak in a clear, accurate and professional manner
- Understanding medical terminology
- Ability to interpret and translate for the provider when necessary
- Ability fully comply with the enhanced infection control requirements of the clinic
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule

- Must be able to perform routine waive tests with accuracy and precision under minimal to no supervision
- Must be able to maintain adequate stock levels
- Must be able to run controls, monitor QC Data, and perform, document, and assure proficiency tests are submitted
- Must be able to keep all lab records on file and assist in laboratory inspection preparedness
- Must be able to maintain instruments following manufactures recommendation
- Must be able to document accurately maintenance on action logs
- Must be able to greet and welcome the patient in a pleasant, respectful, culturally and linguistically appropriate manner
- Must be able to assure all patient questions are answered in a positive and cordial manner
- Must be able to assure the patient has a clear understanding of all communications
- Must be able to communicate patient's problem/complaint to the provider
- Must be able to reinforce to the patients the importance of keeping appointments or communicating changes in their appointments
- Must be able to ask the required questions for a proper assessment
- Must be able to prepare patients for examination and treatment
- Must be able to take patient's history and vital signs
- Must be able to prepare examination and treatment rooms with necessary equipment and supplies
- Must be able to give injections that are in their scope of practice
- Must be able to assist with refills, review all patient medications as per protocols
- Must be able to initiate notes for the nurse on call or others to alert information regarding a patient
- Must be able to assist the providers as requested
- Must be able to collect and process biological specimens for analysis and other lab tests
- Must be able to assist with scheduling tests or treatments as requested
- Must be able to maintain accurate laboratory records for inspections by lab director, lab consultant, and CLIA inspectors
- Must be able to perform pre-visit chart reviews for required health indicators, vaccines, labs, etc
- Must be able to review chart under the direction of provider and obtain and place report results in charts
- Must be able to make list of anticipated needs for patients (vaccines, labs orders,etc)
- Must be able to assure the patient information and records is completed timely and is current
- Must be able to keep all laboratory records on file and assist in lab inspection preparedness
- Must be able to adhere to all HIPAA regulations in and outside of the Clinic
- Must be able to communicate patient information as requested to enhance patient services
- Must be able to actively participate in team huddles to assure maximum appointments, gaps in the day, and works on same day access
- Must be able to meet with the team to ensure that the provider's productivity and schedule is reviewed and populated throughout the day
- Must be able to help in the orientation of new employees or students
- Must be able to work with unit team members as well as other clinic personnel to ensure a smooth patient flow
- Must be able to communicate specific patient needs and/or population management information
- Must be able to maintain a friendly and safe environment for self and others
- Must be able to keep work area clean and disinfected daily
- Must be able to record temperature reading daily for control devices
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations as per training
- Must be able to refrain from texting and speaking on the cell phone while on duty
- Must be able to refrain from informal communication with patients and others
- Must be able to fully participate in the performance improvement and follow all the Clinic policies and procedures
- Must be able to attend work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with Clinic leave policy
- Must be able to perform other duties as assigned
- Must be able to submit required documentation in a timely manner (credentialing requirements, license renewals, certifications, CNE attendance, etc)
- Must be able to always adhere to a professional appearance in dress and behavior/conduct
- Knowledge of practice level procedures, techniques, and practice of patient care
- Knowledge and skilled in use of computer and computer software (EMR, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc) programs as necessary and telephone system
- Knowledge of community resources
- Knowledge of SC policies and procedures
- Knowledge of the Chronic Care Model and Patient-Centered Medical Home Model (PCMH)
