Job Summary

Greet patients respectfully, measure vital signs including pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height, and prepare treatment rooms for examinations. Review and update health records by verifying diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical documents. Perform clerical duties such as checking inventory, tracking referrals, and answering phones. Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly while working closely with the primary care physician to deliver excellent patient care within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Degree or GED
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association
  • One year of medical assistant healthcare experience
  • Two years of clerical experience in a physician's office
  • Possesses problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications

  • If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina)
  • If BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association is preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH
  • Preferred, not required: One year of medical assistant healthcare experience
  • Preferred, not required: Two years of clerical experience in a physician's office
