Job Summary
The Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) role focuses on accurate and compliant coding, charge capture review, and claims support for behavioral health services within a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC). The specialist ensures adherence to payer guidelines (federal, state, Medicaid/Medicare, and commercial) and supports revenue integrity and compliance initiatives. Responsibilities include assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers; conducting routine documentation audits; collaborating with providers and staff to improve documentation and coding specificity; assisting with denial management and appeals; monitoring regulatory updates; maintaining HIPAA confidentiality; and supporting internal/external audits and quality improvement efforts. The position requires the ability to work in an office setting, with potential travel for training/meetings, and is eligible for a full benefits package. Pay starts at $20.00/hour (Ashland, KY).
Required Qualifications
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CPC, or equivalent coding certification required
- Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience in medical coding, billing, or health information management required
- Minimum of three (4) years of coding experience in behavioral health, mental health, substance use treatment, or healthcare setting preferred
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in Business or Medical Billing and Coding preferred (experience may substitute for degree)
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
- Successful completion of a background screening
- Successful completion of a TB skin test or proof of negative chest x-ray or other documentation
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, Medicaid, Medicare, and behavioral health billing requirements
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CPC, or equivalent certification required
- Maintain ongoing training (20 hours annually)
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
