Job Summary
Operate commercial vehicles including hi-rail trucks and detector cars on roadways and railroad tracks while performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Assist with rail flaw detection testing, monitor onboard computer systems, and conduct ground-level rail inspections using handheld equipment. Perform routine vehicle maintenance such as oil changes and filter replacements, assist with detector carriage repairs, and maintain equipment cleanliness. Follow all DOT and safety regulations, wear required PPE, and complete annual Road Worker Safety training. Communicate with crew members via radio and report safety concerns or track conditions promptly. This high-travel field-based role requires extended periods away from home, including 3–4 months at a time in varied weather conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class 5 or higher with air brake endorsement
- Ability to pass a health assessment, including a drug screen, audiogram, and physical abilities test, and background check (where permitted by law)
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Basic mechanical aptitude (e.g., changing tires, replacing batteries)
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
- Must be able to climb steps/ladders frequently (up to 300 steps per day)
- Must be able to walk on uneven railroad surfaces
- Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, and crawl for extended periods
- Must be able to work in confined spaces (including under vehicles with ~18-inch clearance)
- Must be able to sit or drive for extended periods
- Must be able to lift up to 85 lbs., occasionally assist with over 100 lbs.
- Vision: Ability to distinguish colors (red/green/yellow), read monitors, and meet DOT/FRA vision standards
- Hearing: Ability to hear verbal communication, alarms, and radio transmissions in a safety-sensitive environment
- Must be available for extensive travel (3–4 months at a time) within assigned regions
- Must be able to perform work in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions

- Must be able to wear required PPE at all times
- Must be able to complete required training, including annual Road Worker Safety
- Must be able to communicate clearly with crew members via radio, intercom, and in-person
- Must be able to report safety concerns, equipment issues, and track conditions promptly
- Must be able to maintain professional relationships with railroad personnel
- Must be able to pass a drug test
- Must be able to pass a physical abilities test
- Must be able to pass an audiogram
- Must be able to pass a health assessment
Desired Qualifications
- 2+ years of commercial driving experience
- High School Diploma or CAEC
