Job Summary
Operate a residential refuse truck equipped with automatic side-load equipment to collect waste and recyclables from wheeled carts along assigned routes. Use in-cab controls to position, grab, lift, and dump carts while maintaining safe, eyes-forward operation. Follow daily route sheets and onboard systems to complete stops within scheduled timeframes, performing pre- and post-trip inspections and reporting defects promptly. Monitor cart conditions, handle occasional extra items per guidelines, and accurately complete electronic logs including route sheets and incident reports. Interact professionally with customers and adhere to all DOT regulations, safety rules, and local ordinances. Work outdoors in all weather conditions with frequent climbing and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License with air‐brake endorsement
- Minimum 1-2 years of commercial driving experience
- Driving record that meets company and insurance standards
- Ability to pass required background checks, drug/alcohol screens, and DOT physical
- Experience or strong aptitude for operating automatic side‐load equipment from the cab
- Solid knowledge of safe operation of heavy trucks, hydraulic systems, and automated collection equipment
- Ability to maneuver safely in tight residential streets, cul‐de‐sacs, alleys, and congested areas
- Strong situational awareness and hazard recognition skills
- Effective communication with dispatch, supervisors, and customers
- Ability to use onboard computers or handheld devices
- Strong time‐management skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Must be available for work performed outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Must be able to handle frequent climbing in and out of the truck cab
- Must be able to perform occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling of up to 50 pounds
- Must be available for typical workday up to 10-11 hours with early‐morning start times
- Must be available for overtime, weekends, and holidays based on route needs
