Job Summary
Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes and measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood, steel, and other materials. Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring, and erect walls and roof systems while fitting windows, doors, stairs, mouldings, and hardware. Survey building locations and levels, operate CADD software, and estimate costs and materials. Schedule and coordinate site work, instruct apprentices, and supervise up to two workers. Maintain, repair, and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, and industrial plants. Work 30 to 40 hours per week in a permanent role requiring secondary education and 1 to less than 7 months of experience.
Required Qualifications
- Secondary (high) school graduation certificate
- 1 to less than 7 months experience
- Construction work setting
- Maintenance and repair expertise
- Ability to prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Ability to measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Ability to prepare tenders and quotations
- Ability to build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
- Ability to fit and install windows, doors, stairs, mouldings and hardware
- Ability to schedule and co-ordinate work on sites
- Ability to survey building locations and levels
- Ability to instruct apprentices
- Ability to supervise other workers
- Ability to estimate costs and materials
- Ability to operate CADD and other computer software systems
- Ability to maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments
- Hand tools experience
