Job Summary
Oversee and participate in skilled carpentry and locksmith tasks for a crew of subordinates, including building, repairing, and installing structural woodwork, cabinetry, flooring, and doors in accordance with building codes. Procure materials from vendors, operate power tools, and maintain equipment while ensuring safety protocols and proper tool usage. Perform specialized duties such as repairing window panes, replacing hardware, and executing light concrete or forming work. Drive a vehicle to work locations, maintain it, and keep records of completed work and material usage. Work under general supervision, often in schools, offices, or fixed sites, with potential evening shifts and rotation. Requires a high school diploma, carpentry apprenticeship, and valid vehicle operator's license.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of high school
- Apprenticeship carpentry training
- Extensive progressively more responsible experience in the carpentry trade at the journey level
- Equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability
- Certificate of Asbestos Training
- Appropriate, valid automotive vehicle operator's license
- Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all essential tasks, including lifting up to 80 pounds
- Ability to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time
- Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and bucket trucks up to 40 feet high
- Thorough knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the carpentry, locksmith trade, and welding (sheetmetal) trades
- Thorough knowledge of building construction and maintenance codes related to carpentry work and federal regulations related to handicapped access
- Thorough knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions
- Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials pertinent to the trade
- Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the full journey level
- Ability to observe, monitor, train, assign, lead and make recommendations to superior regarding the work of subordinates assigned to a crew
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, blueprints and sketches
- Ability to estimate time and materials needed for small jobs
- Ability to perform routine record keeping tasks and arithmetic computations
- Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships
- Some positions assigned to this classification may be required to work an evening shift on a regular or rotating basis
