Job Summary
Build, maintain, dismantle, paint, and inspect all freight cars, including wood and steel models. Perform pipe and inspection work on air brake equipment, operating punches, shears, oxyacetylene cutting tools, and electric welders. Visually inspect machinery, listen for unusual sounds to diagnose malfunctions, and clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, and gears. Detect wear, misalignment, or other problems by measuring parts and inspecting them against safety, operating, and maintenance instructions. This Extra Board Shift role requires an Associate's degree in applied sciences with a focus on mechanical applications or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector. Candidates must be qualified welders, familiar with AAR, FRA, and DOT regulations, and possess a current driver's license. The position involves regularly working near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions while occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Initial pay ranges from $27.04 to $30.42 per hour, increasing to $33.80 per hour after six months to a year of qualification.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree (A.S.) in applied sciences with emphasis on mechanical applications
- Equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or repairer
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Familiarity with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations
- Ability to speak and write English
- Qualification as a welder
