Job Summary
Maintain and optimize circulatory support and homeostasis for patients undergoing cardiac and non-cardiac procedures by assembling, calibrating, and operating the heart-lung machine. Assemble, operate, and monitor myocardial preservation during cardiopulmonary bypass, while independently responding to patient needs with appropriate therapies. Administer medical gases, anesthetics, drugs, blood products, and crystalloid solutions, and manage induced hypothermia, hemodilution, and ventricular assist devices. Ensure quality practice and safety standards are maintained while utilizing specialized knowledge to participate in professional development and teaching activities.
Required Qualifications
- At minimum, completion of a BSc degree with a diploma in Cardiovascular Perfusion
- Certification (or eligibility of certification) with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP)/or American Board of Clinical Perfusion
- Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice procedures, instruments, equipment, and special techniques
- Specialized knowledge of extracorporeal physiology and mechanics (both adult and pediatric) required
- Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practices
- Excellent judgement, problem recognition, and problem solving-skills
- Effective time management skills with the ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others
- Highly developed expertise and effective communication with all other health team members are essential in making the frequent, critical decisions required during the course of a bypass or other related perfusion procedures
- Ability to work both effectively and accurately, adapting under stressful conditions in a fast-paced team environment
- Demonstrated interest in continuing education
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
