Job Summary

The Cardiac Technician conducts a wide range of non-invasive cardiac tests under direct supervision for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Responsibilities include performing cardiac tests and monitoring patient heart functions using cardiology equipment, placing electrodes for EKG/telemetry (Holter) monitoring, calibrating and maintaining equipment, providing care and counseling to cardiac patients to ensure comfort and safety, alerting nurses or physicians to critical values, obtaining and recording patient information and medical histories, interpreting EKG results, and generating written reports. In some departments, the technician may monitor multiple patients simultaneously and communicate concerns to staff, and may dispose of controlled substances with an RN after a dose is administered. Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology, and familiarity with cardiac rhythms, equipment, computers, and medical terminology. Certifications or degrees from the listed options are required or obtained within specified timelines depending on facility needs.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or its equivalent is required
  • Possess Certified Cardiographic Technician
  • Associate’s degree or higher in a health science field
  • Three years’ experience as a cardiac technician
  • Obtain Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT), Cardiac Rhythm Monitoring certification (CRAT) or National Telemetry Certification within one year into position
