Job Summary
Respond to all calls for service, conduct investigations, and document findings per department policies. Provide security through routine patrols of assigned buildings, parking areas, and grounds while maintaining continuous radio communication with the dispatcher. Manage crowd control during campus events, verify building access, and identify safety hazards to submit work orders or coordinate emergency repairs. Escort students and staff, enforce parking regulations, and secure buildings by inspecting doors, windows, and mechanical systems. Assist with officer training and provide relief staffing for the Control Center. Maintain knowledge of campus facilities to ensure compliance with university, state, and local laws. Complete incident reports and required certifications promptly.
Required Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow printed materials, instructions, and procedures
- Ability to remain calm under pressure, respond appropriately in emergency situations, and communicate effectively with the appropriate authorities
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately recall events for incident and report documentation
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and general computer skills
- High school diploma or equivalent education
- Certified by the State of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a CSO within 180 days of employment
- Valid Virginia State Vehicle Operator's License
- Must have good teamwork skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions
- Ability to lift 50lbs
- Prolonged standing/setting/wrist movement
- Prolonged walking significant distances between and within building on campus often in adverse weather conditions
- Candidates must successfully pass a background check that is satisfactory to the University
- Shift will include evenings or overnights to meet needs of the department
