Job Summary

Operate bus #229 transporting students to and from Martinsburg High, South Middle, Orchard View Intermediate, and Rosemont, with morning and afternoon split-shift hours. Perform pre/post trip inspections, safely use fire extinguishers, and assist students with disabilities while communicating with parents, school officials, and supervisors. Mop and clean the vehicle, complete monthly reports, and conduct annual orientation on regulations. Perform maintenance duties including checking oil and antifreeze levels, installing snow chains, and bringing the bus to the garage. Work overtime as needed and maintain composure while navigating heavy traffic and extreme temperatures.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Criminal background check conducted
  • Meet the definition of 'Qualifications' in WV Code §18A-4-8b
  • demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state approved competency test)
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have at least three years of driving experience as a licensed operator of any vehicle
  • Must obtain and maintain WV CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements
  • Must successfully complete WV School Bus Safety Program and pass requisite online and skills tests
  • Must be able to climb in and out of bus to check engine compartment
  • Must maintain valid CPR and First Aide Certification
  • Must pass a physical examination form a Medical Examiner as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
  • Must pass a drug and alcohol screen
  • Must meet all requirements outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detail but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
  • Understanding of confidentiality and commitment to abide by confidentiality regulations
  • Must be able to lift and/or move at least 50 pounds (100 pounds minimum on a special education bus)
  • Specific vision abilities required: distance vision to read road signs and detect road hazards
  • Specific vision abilities required: near vision to monitor instruments as well as student passengers
  • Ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to tell where a sound is coming from
  • Ability to hear in a noisy environment
  • Must be available for split-shift schedule (early morning to late afternoon with time off in-between)
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures from below freezing to occasionally 80°F+
  • Must be able to tolerate moderate to loud noise levels (60-90 dB)
  • Must be able to work on slippery floor surfaces
  • Must be able to work in heavy traffic
  • Must be able to handle stress and fatigue
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed
  • Must be willing to work five day work week
  • Must be willing to perform pre/post trip inspections
  • Must be willing to learn route, including pick up and drop off locations
  • Must be willing to safely use fire extinguisher
  • Must be willing to assist and supervise students with disabilities
  • Must be willing to communicate with students, parents, school officials and supervisors
  • Must be willing to mop and clean inside and outside the vehicle
  • Must be willing to complete proper paperwork
  • Must be willing to conduct a rules and regulations orientation each year on each regular bus run
  • Must be willing to bring bus to garage for regularly scheduled maintenance
  • Must be willing to perform all duties outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336
