Job Summary

Assist bus drivers by helping students board and depart safely, enforce seatbelt rules, and ensure wheelchairs are locked in place. Help students cross the street as needed and drive the bus when requested or necessary. Maintain student discipline, attend meetings for students with Individual Evaluation Plans, and keep medical records current. Assist in maintaining bus cleanliness and interact with supervisors, staff, students, and parents. Perform related duties as required under general supervision. Work 185 days on a part-time basis.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Good driving record
  • Required training
  • Valid state driver's license
  • Ability to operate a school bus
  • Ability to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
  • Ability to lift and/or carry weights of up to fifty pounds
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information
  • Ability to read a variety of policy and procedures manuals, maps, driver handbooks, regulations, etc.
  • Ability to prepare various logs and reports accurately
  • Ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form
  • Ability to make routine independent judgments in absence of supervision
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret received information
  • Ability to record and deliver information
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational backgrounds
  • Ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to determine time
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in operating motor vehicles
  • Ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc.
  • Moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Ability to be adaptable to performing in uncomfortable physical conditions and under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines
  • Ability to talk and/or hear
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Transportation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Bus Monitor
  • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies
  • Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of Florence 1 Schools
  • Ability to use independent judgment as needed in performing routine tasks
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, policy manuals, and related materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department
  • Ability to drive with skill and care, despite noise and other distractions
  • Ability to maintain discipline and handle difficult situations with tact and patience
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations
  • Mathematical ability to handle required calculations
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency
  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the trade
  • Skills in the care and use of required tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain high quality communication and interaction with all District departments and divisions, co-workers and the public

  • Ability to adhere to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the District and various regulatory agencies
