Job Summary
Operate and secure school buses for student transportation to and from schools, designated locations, and field trips in accordance with route sheets and trip tickets. Enforce safety regulations, including defensive driving practices, boarding/departure protocols, and bans on eating, drinking, and cell phone use. Conduct daily safety inspections of bus interiors, exteriors, and engines; administer first aid; and manage emergencies using two-way radios. Maintain high ethical standards, ensure passenger confidentiality, and complete required logs and accident reports. Sweep, empty trash, and clean assigned buses daily.
Required Qualifications
- high school diploma or GED
- previous experience working with children
- valid Class B CDL with P and S endorsements
- ability to read analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- ability to write routine reports
- ability to speak clearly and effectively over a radio communications system
- ability to present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints
- courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others
- ability to react well under pressure
- ability to handle and balance multiple demands at one time
- ability to work with frequent interruptions
- ability to perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism
- ability to use independent judgment
- initiative to act without being asked
- ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality
- pass a physical exam by a certified medical examiner to obtain and retain a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC)
- Mandatory pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening
- ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks
- Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus during the hours of daylight and darkness
