Job Summary
Operate a school bus over designated routes, performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections while maintaining discipline among students. Conduct daily record-keeping for mileage, load counts, and maintenance reports; administer first aid when needed. Maintain equipment cleanliness and communicate via two-way radio to coordinate with schools and the main office. Submit written reports on road hazards and student misconduct to the Transportation Supervisor. Adhere to all state laws, safety procedures, and district policies while operating in varying weather conditions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 18 years of age
- Excellent motor vehicle driving record
- Up-to-date commercial driver's license
- Minimum of 2 years driving experience
- State and federal requirements for required licenses, medical and school bus operator certification
- Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the operation of a school bus
- Knowledge of certification and license required for bus operation
- Understanding of the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment
- Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining the appearance of equipment
- Knowledge of the proper forms and procedures to be completed for reporting student misbehavior, equipment failure, daily activity, mileage and time records
- Knowledge of the proper procedures for emergency situations
- Knowledge of daily bus route and the location of schools and other landmarks
- Ability to operate a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations
- Ability to carry out duties in extreme conditions of weather and noise
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely, and effective manner
- Ability to apply common sense, understanding and independent judgment in the performance of prescribed duties and tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public
- Ability to maintain the required State Department of Education school bus operator's certification, physical performance and commercial driver's license
- Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner
- Ability to move 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds in the event of a bus emergency
- Ability to complete the Physical Performance Test (PPT) in accordance with state requirements
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people or things
- Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information
- Ability to read a variety of administrative and statistical documents and reports
- Ability to prepare various types of reports and documents with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar
- Ability to speak before others with poise, voice control and confidence
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to comprehend and interpret received information
- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions

- Ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, using mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time

- Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment
- Ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
- Moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
- Ability to differentiate colors and shades of color
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the state and federal laws relating to the safe operation of a school bus as well as School District policies and Transportation procedures
- Knowledge of the organization of the District
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
- Ability to make sound, educated decisions
- Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of school buses and other vehicles used for student transportation
- Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required
- Ability to monitor student / employee behavior and to take action as needed to correct behavior problems
- Ability to develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, and subordinates in situations involving bus safety and security
- Knowledge of the layout of local roads and of the locations and characteristics of the various neighborhoods
- Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job
- Ability to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear and effective manner
- Knowledge of terminology and various professional languages within the department
- Knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, punctuation and spelling

- Knowledge of and ability to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers and related software
