Job Summary
Operate a school bus over designated routes, performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and reporting hazards or equipment failures. Maintain student discipline, administer first aid, and communicate with parents and the main office via two-way radio. Complete daily records for mileage, load counts, student data, and maintenance reports while attending required safety meetings. Hold a valid commercial driver's license, medical certification, and current state operator certification. Work variable hours across 180 days, adhering to all state laws and district policies.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 18 years of age
- Excellent motor vehicle driving record
- Up-to-date commercial driver's license
- Minimum of 2 years driving experience
- State and federal requirements for required licenses, medical and school bus operator certification
- Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the operation of a school bus
- Knowledge of certification and license required for bus operation
- Understanding of the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment
- Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining the appearance of equipment
- Knowledge of the proper forms and procedures to be completed for reporting student misbehavior, equipment failure, daily activity, mileage and time records
- Knowledge of the proper procedures for emergency situations
- Knowledge of daily bus route and the location of schools and other landmarks
- Ability to operate a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations
- Ability to carry out duties in extreme conditions of weather and noise
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely, and effective manner
- Ability to apply common sense, understanding and independent judgment in the performance of prescribed duties and tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public
- Ability to maintain the required State Department of Education school bus operator's certification, physical performance and commercial driver's license
- Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner
- Ability to move 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds in the event of a bus emergency
- Ability to complete the Physical Performance Test (PPT) in accordance with state requirements
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people or things
- Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information
- Ability to read a variety of administrative and statistical documents and reports
- Ability to prepare various types of reports and documents with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar
- Ability to speak before others with poise, voice control and confidence
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to comprehend and interpret received information
- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions

- Ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, using mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time

- Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment
- Ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
- Moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
- Ability to differentiate colors and shades of color
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the state and federal laws relating to the safe operation of a school bus as well as School District policies and Transportation procedures
- Knowledge of the organization of the District
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position
- Ability to make sound, educated decisions
- Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of school buses and other vehicles used for student transportation
- Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required

- Knowledge of the layout of local roads and of the locations and characteristics of the various neighborhoods

- Knowledge of terminology and various professional languages within the department
