Job Summary
Conduct daily school bus operations by transporting authorized students to and from school, field trips, and extracurricular events while enforcing rider discipline and adhering to all traffic laws. Perform pre-trip and post-route inspections, maintain accurate rider lists and seating charts, and keep the assigned bus clean and mechanically sound. Report mechanical issues, accidents, or student concerns immediately to the transportation director and file daily inspection logs. Maintain punctuality and professional conduct throughout the nine-month school year, completing mandatory safety training and random drug screenings as required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 21 years of age
- Valid and properly classified Illinois driver's license with an 'S' endorsement
- School Bus Driver's Permit as issued by the Illinois State Board of Education or successful completion of the School Bus Driver Preparation Program as set forth by the Illinois State Board of Education
- Consent in writing to the release of results of reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing by the employer of the applicant to the Secretary of State
- Successful completion of random drug screenings required to operate a school bus
- No history of causing a fatal accident as a result of the unlawful operation of a motor vehicle
- No mental disability or disease within the last five years
- Successful completion of bus driver physical required to operate a school bus
- Successful completion of fingerprint based criminal background check (IL State Police and FBI), sex offender and violent youth offender screening
- Three or more years of driving experience free from revoked, suspended, cancelled or disqualified driver's license
