Job Summary

Inspect school buses pre- and post-trip, reporting equipment deficiencies, then transport students to and from school, activities, and events while maintaining discipline and ensuring safety. Clean the bus inside and out, fuel as needed, and conduct periodic emergency evacuation drills. Record mileage and maintain operational records. Obey traffic laws and safety regulations, assist children with patience, and establish working relationships with school officials, parents, and the public. This temporary, part-time role involves a 10-month schedule with 2.4 hours daily (12 hours weekly) in AM and PM shifts, with no benefits.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle
  • General knowledge of operating a school bus
  • General knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets
  • Skill in the safe operation of a school bus
  • Ability to read and write
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment
  • Ability to assist children using patience and understanding
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina
  • Pre-employment DOT Drug Test

  • All legal requirements of the NC DMV and Henderson County Public Schools
  • Clear criminal background check

  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force
  • Ability to sit, speak, hear, use hands to finger/handle/feel, perform repetitive motions, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, and lift
  • Standard vision requirements

  • Ability to perform visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts
  • Ability to operate machines, motor vehicles, or equipment
  • Ability to observe general surroundings and activities
  • Ability to work near moving mechanical parts

  • Ability to work with fumes or airborne particles
  • Ability to work with toxic or caustic chemicals
