Job Summary
Establish and maintain a supportive relationship with special needs students while monitoring 10 to 25 students per bus route. Assist with loading and unloading, teaching safe conduct, and managing physical needs such as seating, buckling, and hygiene tasks. Operate, care for, and clean bus equipment, including sweeping and emptying trash daily. Relay messages between parents, teachers, and staff, and report student concerns to school personnel. Supervise children during emergency drills and serve as a primary resource for substitute drivers and staff. Follow all District safety regulations and policies while maintaining ethical confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED
- Previous experience working with children
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to speak clearly and effectively over a radio communications system
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints
- Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Ability to use independent judgment and demonstrates initiative to act without being asked
- Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks
- Ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds or more
- Close vision
- Distance vision
- Depth perception
- Ability to adjust focus during the hours of daylight and darkness
- Regular and dependable level of attendance
