Job Summary
Provide physical and emotional support to 10–25 special needs students during daily transportation, assisting with loading, buckling seat belts, hygiene tasks, and functional life skills. Monitor student conduct while riding and teach safe bus procedures. Operate, clean, and maintain assigned buses, including sweeping, emptying trash, and disposing of human fluids safely. Relay messages between parents, teachers, and staff, and report student concerns to school personnel. Supervise children during emergency drills and serve as the primary point of contact for substitute drivers and staff. Maintain confidentiality of student information and adhere to all district safety regulations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED
- Previous experience working with children
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to speak clearly and effectively over a radio communications system
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints
- Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Ability to use independent judgment and demonstrates initiative to act without being asked
- Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks
