Job Summary
Support special education students and provide general supervision to ensure overall safety and support. Assist with other tasks as needed, including helping students become more self-sufficient in the classroom. Work with physically challenged students, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate mobility equipment like wheelchairs and medical devices. Maintain building and bus safety procedures while working in various indoor and outdoor classroom areas. Positions are paid at $17.93/hour and require a high school diploma or GED. Bilingual candidates are preferred. Applicants must complete a background check and onboarding training with the Department of Human Resources. The role involves as-needed substitute work with a commitment to professional hours that may extend beyond a standard 8-to-4 schedule.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Physical capacity to assist the physically challenged student including lifting the student as required
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written
- Computer proficient in skill level appropriate software
- Experience working with challenged students
- Self-starter and able to help student become more self-sufficient and/or successful in classes
- Physically able to help students
- Comfortability assisting with student's equipment including but not limited to the computer, wheel chair, health, mobilizer, immobilizer
- Regular attendance to ensure consistency with students
- Building and school bus safety procedures
- Building and school alarm systems
- Must genuinely like children and enjoy working with young people
- Must not get upset by occasional bad language, threat of physical violence or personal habits of student
- Possess patience so as not get easily discouraged
- Willingness to assume responsibility
- Help students to become one of the class
- Human relations skills and good interpersonal skills
- Confidentiality of all information is critical
- Ability to work well with others
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet
- Close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear
- Must be able to squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and forward 0 to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches
- Must be able to frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk
- Must be able to push/pull items such as tables and carts
- Must be able to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday
- Must be able to work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities
- Must be able to work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom
- Must be able to complete a background check
- Must be able to complete onboarding/training session with The Department of Human Resources
- Must be able to pass Pre-employment fitness-to-perform examinations
