Bus Aide / Part-Time

Job Summary

Monitor student activities and enforce safety rules while assisting the bus driver with loading, unloading, and route surveys. Communicate behavior concerns to drivers and report incidents, accidents, or inappropriate social behavior to appropriate personnel. Assist students in getting on and off the bus, ensure vehicle cleanliness, and conduct emergency evacuation drills. Maintain accurate records of student information, discipline slips, and route descriptions. Work primarily on school buses under varying weather conditions, requiring the ability to handle emergencies and extreme temperatures. Complete 180 days of part-time work with a high school diploma and South Carolina driver's license.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Acceptable background check
  • South Carolina Driver's license
  • Knowledge of state laws, regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the safe transport of students
  • Knowledge of the operation of a school bus and equipment
  • Understanding of the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment
  • Knowledge of the proper procedures for reporting student misbehavior and other problems, and equipment failure
  • Knowledge of the proper procedures for emergencies
  • Familiarity with daily bus route and the location of schools and other landmarks
  • Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining the appearance of equipment
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely, and effective manner
  • Capability of applying common sense understanding and independent judgment in the performance of prescribed duties and tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public
  • Ability to work with children, in an effective manner
  • Ability to carry out duties in extreme conditions of weather and noise
  • Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner
  • Ability to assist students in evacuating the bus under emergency conditions
  • Ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and awareness, and the supervision of children
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb bus steps, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch
  • Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and focus vision abilities
  • Ability to respond and/or prevent children from endangering themselves or others and to react in the event of emergencies
  • Ability to talk, read, and hear, and effectively perceive and exchange information in a variety of oral, written and/or printed formats
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Ability to take direction, and comply with all applicable laws, policies and procedures
  • Ability to interact well with others, including students and parents
  • Emotional control and adaptability to stressors, tight deadlines, frequent changes
  • Meeting all required medical, drug testing, and physical performance standards
  • Willingness to become a certified school bus driver in the future
  • Experience in working with children
  • Willingness to perform other duties as assigned or requested
  • Willingness to ride under varying road and weather conditions
  • Willingness to comply with designated policies and procedures at all times
  • Willingness to wear proper apparel, including appropriate shirts, shoes (closed toe and closed heel), and a Lexington School District Two identification badge
