Job Summary
Building Official responsible for the administration, supervision, and enforcement of city building and construction codes. Directs permitting and plan review, supervises staff, ensures regulatory compliance, maintains knowledge of code revisions, and develops policies and procedures. Communicates with contractors, building owners, employees, and the public; participates in emergency operations and required NIMS training; manages divisional budgets and training, and supports interagency coordination during emergencies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in building construction or inspection, including five years in a supervisory or management role
- Certification in accordance with Chapter 468, Florida Statutes as a Building Code Administrator, required
- Valid Florida driver’s license
- Ability to lift/move up to 45 pounds and perform inspections
- Ability to read and interpret engineering designs, specifications, and construction plans
- Proficiency with computers and applicable software programs
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices governing the building trades
- Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the work of multiple groups of employees
- Excellent communication and public interaction skills
- Emergency preparedness and response participation including required NIMS training
- Essential personnel designation with duties including emergency operations coordination
- Preferred certifications: Florida Sterling Examiner, Baldrige Examiner, or Kaizen (Lean Six Sigma)
