Job Summary
Special Education Teacher for an elementary therapeutic program (K-6) at the Amherst Public School District. The role requires leading a substantially separate classroom, providing academic planning and instruction, direct instruction in social skills, self-regulation strategies, executive function, curriculum modification/adaptation, and development/monitoring of social and positive behavioral supports. The candidate will collaborate with paraeducators, teachers, service providers, the program coordinator, administration, families, and a multidisciplinary team, and will manage IEP processes from development through implementation. Strong leadership, organization, time management, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting are essential. Experience with mild/moderate and atypical learning profiles, inclusive practices, and de-escalation, with MA-approved physical restraint training, is highly valued. Bilingual (Spanish/English) is desirable but not required.
Required Qualifications
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Licensure in Moderate Disabilities, level K-8 or 5-12, or Severe Disabilities, All levels
- Experience with completing all aspects of the IEP process including implementation, monitoring, and development
- Strong case management and home-school communication skills
- Ability to supervise and work collaboratively with paraeducator staff, including completing para formal and informal evaluations
- Ability to support students within the general education classroom, and/or co-teach with general education teachers as directed by building-based administration
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) desirable but not required
- Strong de-escalation skills; trained, or willing to be trained in MA-approved physical restraint procedure
