Job Summary
The Browse Gardener will care for and maintain browse species, exhibit vegetation, and plant materials used throughout the Indianapolis Zoo. Responsibilities include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching, selecting and preparing browse materials for animal use, monitoring plant health, maintaining records, operating landscape tools (including chainsaws and trimmers), and supporting conservation initiatives, tours, educational programs, guest interactions, and special events. The role supports animal diets and habitats while ensuring materials are safe and appropriate for specified species; candidates should be able to work outdoors and indoors, lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, and have a valid Indiana driver's license. Education of a High School diploma or equivalent is required, with preferred qualification including vocational certification or an associate/bachelor's degree in horticulture/forestry or related field. This is a part-time variable position (20-29 hours per week) and may require weekend work. Employment is contingent on pre-employment checks and salary requirements to be submitted with the application.
Required Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age
- Valid Indiana driver's license insurable by Zoo's insurance
- High School diploma or equivalent is required
- Minimum of one year of experience in horticulture, forestry, or related field preferred
- Ability to drive Zoo vehicles
- Ability to work outdoors and indoors under various conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally
- Prior work-related experience preferred
- College coursework may be substituted for work experience (relevant field)
- Relevance degree/certification is a plus (horticulture/forestry)
- Possession of vocational certification/associate or bachelor's degree is a plus
