Job Summary
District Avalanche Technician provides frontline technical expertise for avalanche risk assessment and mitigation within the Avalanche, Weather and Radio Programs. Responsibilities include conducting independent snowpack and weather observations, evaluating avalanche hazards, and supporting time-sensitive, decision-making that affects highway safety and reliability. The role develops and refines avalanche hazard assessments and mitigation strategies, operates under regulatory requirements and district priorities, and collaborates with maintenance contractors, emergency responders, other ministry staff, helicopter service providers, and the public. Requires interpreting rapidly changing conditions, applying established standards, and delivering structured avalanche forecasting and risk mitigation. Must possess/obtain Canadian Avalanche Association certifications and demonstrated field experience with winter-season avalanche operations, weather observations, and risk management; valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence; physically fit for demanding field work and potential helicopter-supported operations.
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma in forestry, geography, engineering or meteorology with emphasis on avalanche phenomenon and snow science research plus three winter seasons of operational avalanche program experience; OR secondary school graduation with a minimum of five winter seasons of operational avalanche program experience; Must be registered or eligible for registration with the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) as a professional member in good standing; CAA certification in Avalanche Operations Level 2 (Level 3 preferred); Introduction to Weather (preferred); Avalanche Search and Rescue Level 1 (preferred); Introduction to Snow Avalanche Mapping (preferred); Advanced First Aid (WorkSafeBC approved); Incident Command System 200 (preferred); Blasting Certification and Explosives Experience; Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and WHMIS; Valid Avalanche Control Blasting Certificate for Hand Charge and Helicopter Control Missions; Experience storing, transporting, handling, fixing and firing explosives for avalanche control; Knowledge of provincial/federal regulations including WorkSafeBC and WHMIS; Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting >20kg, climbing towers >4m, winter mountain travel; Suitability for potential helicopter-supported field operations (preferred).
