Job Summary
Perform structural engineering design and analysis for steel and concrete bridges, retaining walls, and foundations. Develop structural calculations, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for preliminary and final designs in coordination with project engineers and CADD staff. Apply AASHTO LRFD and applicable Illinois DOT, Illinois Tollway, and Chicago DOT standards throughout the design process. Perform bridge rehabilitation, structural evaluation, and load rating analyses of existing structures. Coordinate structural design with roadway, geotechnical, drainage, and other disciplines to develop complete transportation design packages. Participate in project meetings with clients and agencies to resolve technical issues. Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and provide construction support under senior engineer guidance. Independently manage assigned structural design tasks while collaborating with bridge engineering teams across offices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
- Ability to obtain a Structural Engineer (SE) license within two years
- 4-7 years of experience in structural/bridge engineering design
- Familiarity with Illinois DOT, Illinois Tollway, and Chicago DOT standards and procedures
- Experience with bridge design, load rating, and inspection of various structure types
- Design experience using AASHTO LRFD, AISC, ACI, and other North American design codes and standards
- Proficiency in structural engineering software, including CSi Bridge, SAP2000, and STAAD.Pro for 3D modeling and analysis
- Proficiency in LEAP Bridge and MDX Software for steel and prestressed concrete girder design
- Proficiency in LEAP Bridge and LPILE for substructure design
- Proficiency in Mathcad and Excel for hand calculations and verification
- Experienced in MicroStation and OpenRoads/Bridge Modeler for CAD production and plan preparation
- Ability to perform engineering calculations for verification of superstructure and substructure components, including girders, piers, abutments, retaining walls, and deep foundations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in coordinating with clients, preparing technical reports (load rating reports, BCRs, feasibility studies), and responding to RFIs and submittals
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience in bridge load rating analyses using AASHTO LRFR and LFR
- Familiarity with bridge inspections in accordance with NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards)
- Familiarity with AREMA design codes
