Job Summary
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position at Puyallup Tribal Health Authority (PTHA) to provide encouragement, education, and support to pregnant and breastfeeding families within the community. Responsibilities include one-on-one support, sharing evidence-based information on breastfeeding techniques, outreach via phone, virtual, in-person visits, facilitating educational classes and peer support groups, connecting families with lactation consultants and other resources, promoting family wellness with culturally responsive care, completing WIC certifications/recertifications, maintaining participant documentation, and coordinating referrals with healthcare and community partners. Requires personal breastfeeding experience, WIC program involvement, healthcare/community health experience, and relevant certifications or training within specified timeframes. License/certification requirements include Washington State Medical Assistant Phlebotomist certification (or ability to obtain) and WIC Certifier Competency Training within six months. Native American Preference in employment applies. Location: Tacoma, WA on-site. Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Personal breastfeeding experience for at least six (6) months within the past three (3) years
- Personal experience participating in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program
- One (1) year of experience in healthcare, community health, human services, or a related setting
- Current Washington State Medical Assistant Phlebotomist certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
- Ability to complete Washington State WIC Certifier Competency Training within six (6) months of hire
