Job Summary
Provide evidence based lactation information, counseling, and support to prenatal and postpartum WIC participants. Present breastfeeding as the normal feeding method to all WIC contacts, while accepting and supporting whatever method of feeding the family chooses. Contact the prenatal WIC client at least once before delivery and provide information prenatally on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, latch, hospital steps, supply and demand, preventing problems, and growth spurts. After birth, contact postpartum women who elect to breastfeed to assist in positioning, provide lactation information and support, and encourage continued breastfeeding; arrange follow-up contacts via text, phone, email, postcard or face-to-face counseling; meet with participants in the office to assist lactation counseling. Manage breast pump loaning, cleaning, inventory, and monthly check-ins; document pump-related contacts. Answer WIC client calls 24 hours a day and arrange coverage if unavailable more than 24 hours. Maintain accurate records of all contacts in client charts and spreadsheets; refer breastfeeding problems to the WIC CPA/IBCLC or physician as needed. Attend breastfeeding conferences and trainings; plan and lead the monthly Breastfeeding Support Group; assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding and facilitate breastfeeding classes in assigned offices; work at least half of assigned hours in the office or designated hospital.
Required Qualifications
- Must have at least 1 child that was breastfed for at least 6 months within the last 5 years
- Must see breastfeeding as the best way to feed an infant
- Fluent in Spanish, both spoken and written communication, preferred
- Must be available to participants outside of usual clinic hours and clinic environment
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
