Job Summary
Boat Captain Apprentice I program provides a two-year apprenticeship to acquire the foundation in traditional and modern seamanship with the goal of pursuing a USCG 100-ton Master’s License. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in vessel handling under power and sail, marine systems diagnostics/repair, navigation planning, weather interpretation, VHF radio operation, and logkeeping, rotating through system maintenance, trip planning, and underway operations aboard vessels from 18' workboats to 65’ Subchapter T passenger vessels and 60’ historic boats. Responsibilities include operating vessels under licensed captains, vessel preparation, crew briefings, passenger communication, underway logistics, maintenance, safety drills, and supporting public programs and educational trips; training in seamanship, Rules of the Road, safety protocols, and vessel-specific operations; accumulate sea service hours and maintain underway-hour logs. The role requires physical work, flexible scheduling including evenings/weekends/holidays, and public-facing representation of CBMM.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
- Valid driver’s license
- Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
- Ability to obtain Merchant Mariner Credential and USCG Medical Certificate
- Drug testing is required upon acceptance and will be done randomly
- Basic familiarity with marine vessels
