Job Summary
Develop and align mentor recruitment strategies to expand the Black Achievers program into new communities like Durham. Build partnerships with corporate, community, and grassroots organizations to grow the mentor pool while ensuring recruitment reflects the diversity of Black communities. Design and facilitate training sessions on youth engagement, anti-Black racism awareness, and mentorship best practices. Coordinate background checks, documentation, and orientation to ensure mentors are prepared for weekly sessions, workshops, and events. Conduct outreach campaigns, information sessions, and networking events to engage potential mentors, then coordinate mentor-mentee matching based on interests and lived experience. Monitor participation, track engagement metrics, and analyze feedback to maintain program quality and sustainability.
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Social Work, Community Development, Education, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in community outreach and engagement, volunteer/mentor coordination, and youth programming, preferably with Black or equity-deserving communities
- Strong understanding of anti-Black racism and systemic barriers impacting Black youth, as well as culturally responsive and Afrocentric approaches to programming
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills
- Program coordination and organization skills
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, and weekends as needed
- Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design

- Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services

- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Successful completion of a Police Records Check
- Vulnerable Police Records Check (required within the first four months and every three years thereafter)
