Job Summary
Biosampling Standardization Specialist to support NOAA SEFSC Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD) through QA/QC of dockside biosampling operations, data exploration, and training material development. Responsibilities include accompanying TIP samplers in the field, generating QA/QC reports from the TIPS web portal, meeting with contractors to discuss results, updating SAS code for the QA/QC tool, reviewing historical TIP data with SQL, coordinating with developers for data-collection improvements, developing curricula and manuals for electronic data collection, providing training and support to TIP samplers, and participating in SEFSC outreach and training events. Requires periodic travel to coastal field sites; location is 75 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami, Florida. Full-time with benefits; requires BS plus three years’ relevant experience and proficiency in SQL/SAS, reporting, and marine biology concepts.
Required Qualifications
- BS Degree plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and methodologies of fish or related biological fields sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks.
- Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
- Computer literate and experienced with SQL, SAS, and common word processing, database, and graphics programs.
- Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations.
Desired Qualifications
- MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field
- Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial fishermen.
- Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish.
- Skill in use of Android mobile device applications for field collection of environmental data.
- Periodic travel required to coastal field sites to accompany TIP samplers, and to training sessions and conferences as needed.
