Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET)

Job Summary
Perform preventive maintenance, functional testing, calibration, and repair of biomedical equipment including diagnostic, therapeutic, and life-support devices at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Troubleshoot malfunctions, respond to service calls based on clinical urgency, and inspect new installations. Maintain accurate records in the CMMS while ensuring compliance with Joint Commission, NFPA, FDA, OSHA, and DoD regulations. Conduct safety testing, identify hazards, and support equipment recalls or corrective action plans. Collaborate with clinical staff for technical guidance and assist with acceptance testing and user training. Lift equipment up to 50 pounds and work in clinical environments adhering to infection control protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology or Engineering
- Participant in a formal GEHC Biomed/FE Services Internship or Military Externship Program
- High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience servicing electrical, electronics, IT, or mechanical equipment
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician
- Working knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service documentation
- Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a clinical engineering team
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Desired Qualifications
- Proficiency with CMMS systems
- BMET certification (CBET, CRES, or CLES)
- Experience in a military medical facility or government healthcare environment
- Experience supporting imaging, anesthesia, patient monitoring, or life-support equipment
