Job Summary
Analyze insurance applications and evidence of insurability, applying holistic underwriting expertise in medical, financial, and lifestyle factors to make sound decisions for ultra-high net worth cases exceeding $25 million. Negotiate with reinsurers in accordance with treaties and internal rules, while effectively communicating and explaining decisions to advisors, clients, or physicians. Partner with specialized case managers, advisors, and business leaders to assess risks up to $200 million, build strong relationships with distribution teams, and identify continuous improvement opportunities. Mentor employees to help them reach the next levels in their careers and contribute to regular HNW case reviews to share knowledge. This Director role reports to the Chief Underwriter and Claims Risk Officer within a high-performing team focused on client-first communication and professional development.
Required Qualifications
- Decision Making Authority >$10,000,000 for Life and $1,000,000 of Critical Illness
- 10-15 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Specialized training: ALU certificate
- Commitment to ongoing education with a goal of attaining the Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) designations
- Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written)
- Ability to influence and negotiate
- Strong knowledge of medical and financial risk factors
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines, and balance completing priorities
- Ability to work independently and eager to take on responsibility
- Some travel and representation at industry and sales events is required
