BESS Fire Protection Engineer I

RemoteUnited States

Full TimeSmall

Job Summary

Interpret complex local and international fire code regulations to convert them into actionable technical product requirements and permitting solutions. Design, implement, and maintain exhaustive code compliance matrixes to track regulatory criteria across distinct deployment areas while proactively identifying compliance gaps and developing engineering workarounds. Support operational fire safety initiatives by defining system modeling, configuration, and full-scale testing parameters for deflagration and fire propagation potentials. Synthesize test data and compliance profiles into visual dashboards and executive reports to drive data-backed storytelling for regional leadership. Directly participate in technical issue resolution pipelines to uncover root causes and finalize systemic engineering adjustments. Keep a continuous pulse on shifting global codes and energy storage safety benchmarks to advance the baseline safety of regional product deployments.

Required Qualifications

  • Mandatory BESS Experience: Candidates MUST possess between two (2) and five (5) years of dedicated, direct professional experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Candidates whose background is limited primarily or solely to traditional commercial building fire sprinkler/suppression systems design will not be entertained or considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or direct testing/certification exposure to, UL 9540, UL 9540A, and UL 1973 protocols.
  • Practical structural application of NFPA Standards 855 (Energy Storage Systems), 68 (Deflagration Venting), 69 (Explosion Prevention), 70 (NEC), 72 (National Fire Alarm Code), 110, and 111.
  • Proven experience drafting core fire compliance documentation, engineering briefs, and running Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) fire or plume modeling simulations.
  • Highly adept at isolating anomalies within complex data models and translating dense engineering restrictions into direct operational workflows.
  • A proactive curiosity and proven ability to rapidly master emerging software platforms, technical modeling tools, and evolving BESS criteria.
  • Minimum of an Undergraduate or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent technical field with verified engineering experience.
  • A relentless focus on execution characterized by deep personal ownership, independent execution capabilities, and a collaborative, forward-thinking mindset.
  • Outstanding public presentation and relationship-building skills, with a track record of driving cross-functional alignment and clearly conveying complex hazards to non-technical audiences.
