Job Summary

Provide physical and psychological care to patients with psychiatric disorders in the Duke Regional Hospital Emergency Department. Responsibilities include observing patients and assessing progress, engaging patients in recreational or social activities, assisting with activities of daily living (beds, bathing, hygiene, feeding, dressing), aiding in position changes and mobility, managing patients in seclusion or restraint as needed, ensuring safety and infection-control compliance, participating in care team discussions, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and supporting treatment planning and patient education. Strong emphasis on teamwork, safety, and compassionate, patient-centered care in a fast-paced hospital ED setting.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • 1 year of experience working with patients with substance abuse, mental health, dementia diagnosis, intellectually or disabled preferred
  • Nurse Aid Registry of North Carolina or Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor in North Carolina or Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in North Carolina or Certification as a Behavioral Health Technician by The Academy of Addiction Professionals or American Medical Certification Association
  • BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by end of new hire orientation
  • CPI certification strongly preferred
  • Meet DUHS credential to perform analysis of blood glucose from finger sticks and report findings; complete quality control measures for this equipment; participate in specimen collection according to test requested; patient identification, specimen labeling, collection verification; instruct patients in collection and preservation of urine, sputum and stool samples; obtain and record vital signs
