Job Summary
Battery Modeling Engineer at Zipline develops, validates, and owns cell-level and pack-level battery models (electrochemical and equivalent circuit) across multiple fidelities to support cell selection, fast charging, and battery lifetime. Responsibilities include integrating battery models into Zipline’s simulation frameworks, developing state estimation and controls-oriented algorithms (SOC/SOH/SOE/SOP), and collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and systems teams to deploy models for fleet optimization and real-time operations. Required focus areas encompass electrochemical modeling (SPM/SPMe/P2D), model validation campaigns (EIS, HPPC, OCV, aging studies), pack-level electro-thermal modeling, and experience with modeling frameworks and programming languages (MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, or Rust). Preferred qualifications include advanced degrees (MS or PhD), familiarity with PyBaMM, and experience with battery degradation and state estimation algorithms.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience (or PhD + 2 years) in battery modeling.
- Strong background in electrochemical battery modeling including SPM/SPMe/P2D models, equivalent circuit models, and cell degradation mechanisms.
- Experience designing and analyzing battery characterization and validation test campaigns including EIS, HPPC, OCV, and cycle/calendar aging studies.
- Experience using MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, or Rust.
- Strong understanding of numerical methods and optimization fundamentals.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex systems and datasets in simple terms and synthesize information from disparate sources into clear, concise insights.
