Job Summary
Principal Backend Engineer at Paytm responsible for defining technical design and implementation roadmap across multiple backend solutions. You will work with engineering leadership to ensure squads are equipped with the right expertise to deliver scalable distributed internet systems. The role emphasizes hands-on backend expertise (Java/Spring Boot/AWS/Node), experience with modern AI tooling (Agentic AI, LLM, RAG, Cursor, Copilot), open-source tooling, and leadership/communication to drive architectural decisions, performance optimization, and cross-team collaboration. Location is Bengaluru, Karnataka, with on-site responsibilities; opportunities to contribute to developer communities and participate in the company’s large-scale digital payments and merchant services ecosystem.
Required Qualifications
- 8 to 12 years of software design/development experience in building massively large scale distributed internet systems and products
- Hands on experience in Advanced Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Node, Agentic AI, LLM, RAG, Cursor, Copilot
- Experience with open source tools & frameworks; broader cutting edge server-side technologies
- Active contributor to developer communities like Stack Overflow, Topcoder, GitHub, Google Developer Groups (GDGs)
- Superior organization, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills; self-starter who can work with minimal guidance in a fluid environment
- Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent (Preferred)
- Expertise in Java, RDBMS, Kafka/RabbitMQ, Redis/Aerospike, Microservices, AWS
- Strong experience in scaling, performance tuning & optimization at API and storage layers
- Problem solving with a passion for excellence
