Job Summary
Backend Engineer at Freehand building the distributed systems, APIs, and AI agent infrastructure powering AI-driven enterprise spend-management workflows. You will design and scale backend services that orchestrate AI agents, integrate with ERPs and financial rails, ensure secure and traceable actions, and contribute to observability, testing, and reliability for high-scale, real-money processes. Responsibilities include designing scalable backend services, owning procurement/invoice/workflow orchestration, building APIs for AI services and external integrations, implementing multi-agent coordination and tool calls, and developing evaluation frameworks and regression tests to ensure task success, cost control, and SLA adherence. Ideal candidates have production backend experience, proficiency in Python/NodeJS/Go, strong knowledge of distributed systems, APIs, databases, and event-driven architectures, and familiarity with enterprise financial contexts and observability tooling.
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience building production backend systems
- Proficiency in Python, NodeJS, Go, or similar languages
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, APIs, microservices, SQL/NoSQL databases, and message queues/event-driven architectures
- Experience designing scalable, fault-tolerant systems
- Experience with financial/SaaS enterprise data or regulated data
- Ability to operate in environments with high business impact from backend failures
