Job Summary
Automation Manager responsible for leading Peak Energy's Sacramento facility's automation and controls infrastructure for a 24/7, 4-shift operation. Role includes shaping automation architecture, hiring/developing a Controls Engineers and Technicians team (7–12 members), participating in equipment design reviews and FATs/SATs, establishing PLC standards (Beckhoff TwinCAT), enabling PLC-to-MES connectivity for real-time data and traceability, and creating and maintaining all control-system documentation and procedures. The position requires interfacing with equipment/process engineers and leadership to align automation with production goals, owning KPIs (system uptime, MTTR, alarm rationalization, preventive maintenance), enforcing safety standards (emergency shutdowns, interlocks), and driving continuous improvement. Travel internationally up to 25% for FATs and commissioning is expected. The role targets candidates with a BS/MS in Electrical/Control Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience, and a minimum of 5 years in a senior controls engineering leadership capacity, with experience in industrial manufacturing environments and Beckhoff TwinCAT implementation.
Required Qualifications
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related engineering discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience managing Controls Engineers in an industrial manufacturing environment
- Hands-on experience with Beckhoff PLCs and TwinCAT v3
- Experience connecting PLC/SCADA systems and MES for production data and traceability
- Experience participating in FATs and SATs, including international travel
- Proficiency with SCADA, HMI, and data acquisition platforms
- Ability to define and document operational procedures for a 24/7 team
- Willingness to travel internationally (up to 25%) for FATs and commissioning
