Job Summary
Auto Mechanic for the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) on a 4-day temporary assignment. Responsible for overhaul, repair, and maintenance of engines and motor-powered equipment; diagnose mechanical and electrical defects; service brake systems, transmissions, steering, hydraulics, and electronic systems; perform minor auto body repairs; supervise and train machinist helpers and automotive staff; prepare reports and manage parts inventories; operate and test vehicles in performance of duties. Requires five years of full-time auto mechanic experience (or 2.5 years plus related education/apprentice experience), NY Class B CDL (or NY license) with Learner's Permit if applicable, and ability to obtain CDL within six months. In-person work location is Woodside, NY.
Required Qualifications
- Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic; or not less than two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as specified plus relevant education or apprentice experience
- Possess New York State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in NY; Learner's Permit for Class B CDL; must obtain Class B CDL within six months if hired with a Learner's Permit
- CDL must be maintained for duration of employment
- Experience with overhaul, repair, and maintenance of engines and automotive systems; knowledge of brakes, transmissions, ignition, steering, fuel, hydraulic, electronic systems; ability to train and supervise personnel
- Ability to prepare reports and orders and maintain records of parts and inventory
- Safety and compliance with NYC Department of Sanitation policies
- Possibility of 4-day temporary schedule (temp assignment) and field/garage work
