Job Summary
Assess vehicle damage, disassemble, and repair cars using tools like cutting guns and hydraulic jacks. Hammers out dents, align chassis frames, replace damaged sections, and weld parts into place. Mix filler resins for minor damage, replace glass and windshields, and repaint vehicles with factory-specified paint. Prepare cost estimates for customers and attempt to complete work orders within labor time guidelines. Inspect vehicles after repair to ensure correct execution. Requires high school diploma, technical school completion, or three-year apprenticeship. Must work safely in noisy areas with odors, lift up to 30 pounds, and visually inspect damage in various weather conditions. Earns $23–$32 per hour flat rate.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of technical school program OR a 3-year apprenticeship as an auto body repairer
- Ability to read job orders and work with very little supervision
- Ability to work with other repairers within an auto body shop
- Thorough understanding of methods and procedures to repair vehicle bodies
- Thorough understanding of how to use tools required for the trade
- Ability to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds at times
- Ability to visually inspect vehicle damage in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections
