Job Summary
Review charging instruments, police reports, and discovery to develop case strategies. Meet with clients to understand their goals, conduct necessary investigations, and research legal issues for presentation in court. Negotiate with the State, advise clients on negotiation status, and litigate required legal issues including trials and post-trial motions. Carry out representation in specialty courts and juvenile units by reviewing documents, discussing strategies with clients, and executing assigned legal work. Conduct practice according to Oregon Rules of Professional Conduct under general supervision from the Chief Attorney. Start January 2027 in Multnomah and Washington counties.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a current member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing
- Experience working in indigent criminal defense
- Areas of proficiency in evidence
- Areas of proficiency in criminal law
- Areas of proficiency in criminal procedure
- Areas of proficiency in court procedure
- Areas of proficiency in ethics
- Areas of proficiency in collateral consequences
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to lead by example in the handling of work assignments, as well as in the treatment of staff and others in the criminal justice system
- Ability to pass background check to access clients and witnesses in correctional facilities (may preclude employees and applicants arrested and jailed) and to testify in court without impeachment (may preclude employees and applicants convicted of certain crimes within the prior 15 years)
- Maintains confidentiality of agency records
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
