Job Summary
Represent indigent clients in juvenile dependency matters by appearing in court for scheduled hearings and trials, presenting oral arguments, and researching facts using computerized and printed legal tools. Compose motions, briefs, and correspondence while preparing cases for trial through witness interviews, disclosure reviews, and filing objections. Review evidence on- and off-site, discuss legal analysis with clients and court personnel, and travel to courts, jails, and detention centers. Attend CFTs, TDMs, staffings, and Continuing Legal Education seminars. This role supports the Office of the Public Advocate's mission to protect the fundamental rights of indigent persons, including juveniles, parents, and individuals facing mental health evaluations.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school
- License to practice law and member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona, at the time of hire
- Valid Arizona driver's license
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy, including drug and alcohol testing requirements for positions designated as safety-sensitive
- Must be able to lift 15-25 pounds from floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead; carry 15-25 pounds a distance of 100 feet or push/pull 100 pounds a distance of 100 feet
- Must be available for overtime/rotating shifts
- Must be able to work with traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.)
- Must be able to handle multiple or complicated tasks
- Must be able to work in close physical proximity with others
- Must be able to work with interruptions, time pressure, and high volumes of work
- Must be able to make decisions, concentrate, and maintain vigilance
- Must be able to communicate in person and by phone with clients, opposing counsel, co-workers, supervisors, and others
- Must be able to travel to courts, jails, detention centers, and correctional facilities

- Must be able to discuss and present analysis of legal issues to clients, court personnel, and related individuals
