Job Summary

Athletic Coach (Boys Football) needed for Castlemont. Responsibilities include instructing and coaching students in football, helping arrange playing and practice schedules, performing coaching duties at practices and contests, and attending required meetings/trainings. Requires knowledge of coaching theory and techniques, rules of high school football, understanding of adolescent psychology in sports, strong communication with parents and staff, safety and CIF policies, and demonstrated ethical sportsmanship. Preference for candidates who are certificated Oakland Unified School District employees with a valid CA teaching credential. Certifications required include CPR and First Aid (or equivalent), or alternatives in athletic-injury care (EMT I/II, sports injury certificate), concussion and heat illness prevention training, and coaching fundamentals (high school) or coaching essentials (middle school). The role emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and academic encouragement for students.

Required Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District who possess a valid CA teaching credential
  • Injury prevention/treatment: Valid CPR card AND Valid First Aid card OR college-level course in care/prevention of athletic injuries OR EMT I or II OR Sports Injury Certificate
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest
  • Concussion
  • Heat illness prevention
  • Fundamentals of coaching training (high school) OR Coaching Essentials training (middle school)
  • COVID Safety
  • Knowledge of coaching theory and techniques in the sport
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport at the high school level
  • Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to maintain safety in coaching at practices and contests
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship and relationships with students
  • Communication with parents/guardians and school staff regarding problems or emergencies during events
  • Knowledge of CIF policies related to athletics
  • Overall Applicant Assessment: ability to instill teamwork, commitment and discipline, etc.
