Job Summary
Athletic Coach duties for boys football at Oakland (Fall, 2026): instruct and coach students in the sport, help arrange playing schedules, perform coaching responsibilities, attend required meetings/trainings. Preference for candidates who are current certificated Oakland Unified School District employees with a valid CA teaching credential. Must meet certifications for injury prevention and care (CPR, First Aid or equivalent, EMT or Sports Injury Certificate), SCA awareness, concussion and heat illness prevention, coaching fundamentals/training, COVID safety, and demonstrate knowledge of coaching theory, adolescent psychology, safety standards, CIF policies, and effective communication with parents and staff. The role emphasizes teamwork, discipline, academic encouragement, community relations, and maintaining high safety standards across practices and contests.
Required Qualifications
- Injury prevention/treatment: Valid CPR card AND Valid First Aid card OR college-level course in athletic injury care OR EMT I or II OR Sports Injury Certificate
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- Concussion
- Heat illness prevention
- Fundamentals of coaching training (high school) OR Coaching Essentials training (middle school)
- COVID Safety
- Provide written evidence of coaching knowledge (courses, prior coaching, youth involvement)
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of high school sport
- Knowledge of adolescent psychology related to sports participation
- Knowledge, skill and ability to maintain safety in coaching practices and contests
- Demonstrated ethical standards related to sportsmanship and relationships with students
- Communication with parents/guardians and school staff about problems or emergencies during contests
- Knowledge of CIF athletics policies
- Overall applicant assessment: ability to instill teamwork, commitment, discipline, positive relations, academic encouragement
