Job Summary
AVP for Research Computing leads the vision, strategy, and execution of institution-wide research computing infrastructure and services, overseeing HPC clusters, data storage, AI/ML environments, cloud platforms, secure data enclaves, and staffing. Partners with IT and research leadership to define priorities, aligns resources with interdisciplinary research goals, and represents the university in consortia focused on research computing infrastructure and data governance. Responsibilities include strategic planning for long-range investments in HPC, research storage, cloud platforms, and security; operational oversight of the computing environment, SLAs, and lifecycle management; faculty engagement and outreach to enable research enablement; and funding strategy, grant support, and governance. Requires deep knowledge of HPC architectures, scientific software, cloud-based research environments, data management, cybersecurity standards (e.g., NIST 800-171, FISMA), and experience leading large technical teams. Compensation ranges from $225,000 to $350,000 with generous PTO, retirement benefits, and tuition assistance. Location is Rochester, NY (US). This role is positioned at a senior level with responsibility for enterprise-scale research computing initiatives and alignment with regulatory requirements and national standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study
- Doctoral or advanced degree in a relevant field of study (strongly preferred)
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in informatics and computational research, with at least 5 years in a leadership role preferred
- Experience as a faculty member in higher education preferred
- Experience working in research-intensive higher education environment preferred
